More than 800 tonnes of food waste saved from landfill through 1, 2, 3 programme
After implementing the new 1, 2, 3 food waste collection programme, we’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to our residents who have helped us to recycle significant amounts of food waste.
More than 800 tonnes of food waste has now been collected to date and saved from going to landfill. This food waste has now been sent to an anaerobic digester where it is transformed into energy which is fed back into the electricity grid and turned into fertiliser used to grow food.
Councillor Chris Hobbs, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Customer Services, said “We’re grateful to all residents for the way that they have adapted to one of the largest changes to council services. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with colleagues at Serco and working closely with residents to ensure the roll-out of the project becomes a well-established service.”
